MBA Program selection

There are currently hundreds of business schools worldwide. The following article summarizes how you should approach the business school screening process.

Review admissions criteria

Narrow down the selection of schools by your compatibility with requirements of GPA, GMAT score, and professional experience. Assuming you fall into the business schools' requirements range, there is no reason to believe any business school would reject your candidacy. Do not over-estimate the importance of statistical averages, as leading MBA programs accept applicants with GMAT scores of 600 and reject applicants whose scores are in the mid 700 range. Not a single business school guarantees admission to its program.

Ask yourself the basic questions

What is the future location of your career? Whether the answer is Europe, America, or the Far East, you have already performed a significant downsizing of potential MBA programs. What are your post-graduation career goals? While this question may seem as just another essay topic, it may very well be the key to your selection woes. School specialty may lead you to reject certain schools, or prefer one school to the other.

Useful sources of information

People are the most useful resource in your pursuit of information on MBA programs. Meet with other MBA candidates; learn what they have found about the business school of your interest. Contact alumni; inquire as to what made them choose that specific business school, what it is they gained from participating in the MBA program, and ask if they have any helpful tips - you will be amazed at what you stand to learn. Finally, you may wish to contact admissions committees with questions pertaining to the business school in which they work.

By now, you should have narrowed the list to about five business schools. In the process, you have probably gathered enough information to develop a certain preference for one or two schools. It is this information that will serve you while preparing your application material and enhance your admission chances.
